One of the biggest trends this fall season is leather leggings. I’ve seen them styled in many ways, from casual to business casual and everything in between. If you’re anything like me, you’ve jumped onto this trend or are looking to soon.
In this blog post, you will learn all about how to style a leather leggings outfit for a chic leather legging outfit, to a casual leather legging outfit, to a leather legging outfit for a night out!
After reading through these tips, you’ll be a pro on how to perfectly style your next pair of leather leggings for any outfit or occasion!
Tips to follow when styling leather leggings
1. Textures
When choosing how to pair texture with leather leggings, there are two approaches 1) same-same or 2) different-different. What do I mean by that? First, you may pair a leather top with leather bottoms (same-same) for a more modern or edgy look. Nordstrom, for instance, has bodysuits in the EXACT type of leather material as leggings staged right next to it. You might have seen Kim Kardashian and many other high-street looks use this approach. Now, if that is WAY too much for you, I recommend the second approach–choose a top ensemble with a completely different texture, which helps add dimension to your look. You can try what I did and use a tweed longline blazer, a sequined top, or a blazer (perfect for the holidays).
2. Colors
When choosing your color themes for your leather leggings, two approaches are easy to follow!
- Monochromatic – Recently, monochromatic looks have been VERY on-trend. Monochromatic looks have little to no contrast between the colors worn. That means, when pairing a top with your leather leggings, choose colors from the same palette. All colors (aka. hues) have variants of tints (hue + white) and shades (hue + black). If you are really struggling to pair monochrome looks together, there are free tine and shade generators online that can guide your shopping efforts!
- Bold contrast – this is a classic way to pair a top with bottoms. Contrast (i.e., the difference between lights and darks) is an effective way to choose your outfit pairings. I recommend a lighter top with dark leather leggings or darker tops with lighter leather leggings. This creates bold-eye catching contrast, and therefore, makes your entire outfit eye-catching as well. This is very appropriate for the holiday season –highly contrasting pairings are great for fall leather legging outfits or leather legging outfits for a night out!
3. Proportions
Lastly, but certainly not least, let’s talk about building proportions through your outfit pieces. Have you ever wondered why certain outfits tend to be “frumpy” or have an unflattering lay? It’s usually because the proportions are off. There is a definitive rule, and you see it repeatedly throughout every era of women’s fashion–it’s the 2/3rds to 1/3rd rule. Imagine segmenting yourself into three equal parts from head to toe. If your top covers 1/3rd of your body, your pants should cover the remaining visible 2/3rds–this is why high-waisted pants/ skirts tend to be so flattering. Conversely, if your top covers 2/3rds of your body, your pants should cover the visible remaining 1/3rd –this is why the longline shacket or oversized shirt paired with leggings is a flattering casual leather leggings outfit look. You can see in the below photo that I did a top-2/3rd with my longline blazer and then used my leggings to fill the visible lower 1/3rd.
