Although a household checked print, dating back to Malaysia and its first imports to Europe during the 17th century, the Gingham pattern has since transformed into a fashion mainstay, but often gets misplaced with its other closely related checked patterns.

The Basic Definition
A pattern of solid coloured squares created by overlapping stripes of the same width. The intermediate squares in the center are 50% lighter than the rest. Material is often cotton or a cotton blend. This checked pattern is not to be confused with plaid which is similar.
Is the gingham pattern here to stay?
In a word–yes. Gingham has transformed through the decades but overall is interpreted as a refined and preppy print. You may immediately think of the 1950’s/1960’s with the poofy skirts, cinched waists, and beautifully collared necklines. Many fashion trends are a spinoff of those structured idealic looks. Even some have taken this “conservative” print into risque designs contrasting the two ideologies unto themselves. It lends to the “darling” look we are after.
What occassions call for the gingham pattern?
When you think gingham you may associate quickly with the following:
- picnics
- a spring stroll at the park
- a first date during the day
- meeting the parents
- attending church
- a day at the orchard
- coffee dates
- brunch
- farmers market
- at the office
- A trip to Nantucket
My Outfit Details
Gingham fashion is ever evolving from the classics to the modern. My two-piece set is a new take on a darling style. Green is the season’s color, so I opted for a green gingham fashion statement. This gingham set is from Shein. Shein has some of the most affordable gingham fashion I’ve seen. They usually have the more modern and sexy styles on top of the classic demure cuts. Other stores I love for classic gingham are J. Crew and Calvin Klein amongst many others. These brands usually carry gingham all year round regardless of whether it’s trending or not that season.
I ordered a size M. Honestly, the pants fit just fine. However, as a bustier women (32-34DD), the top was insufficient in my opinion. I did end up returning this set simply because the top fit wasn’t the best for me. However, this could be perfect for someone else.
