To answer the question: Is a barrette hairstyle acceptable as an adult? The answer–absolutely yes. Barrette hairstyles have quickly come back on the scene since and are likely here to stay for a bit longer.
You may want to know the acceptable mode and way to style these bad boys. They literally come in every color, size, and shape.
Luckily for you, this post is all about how to simply style a barrette hairstyle.
The Stack
I believe I’ve fashioned this term up myself, but I like to call the SIMPLEST barrette hairstyle “the stack.” It’s relatively self-explanatory–you create a stack of barrettes. Feel free to use this in hair up or hair down styles. I chose a hair-up style because I was in a rush to head to the Soulard Farmer’s market and didn’t want my long hair blowing in the wind.
So the next question you may have is how to do I create a stack that is appealing? I’ll do my best to break down tips you can start with on your barrette hairstyle journey.
P.S. If you’re in a rush, read the summary notes for how to achieve a simple barrette hairstyle aesthetic.
The Size
ANY size will work. However, when creating a stack, you want to stay consistent with length rather than width. It’ll look a tad topsy turvy with varying lengths, especially when lined up. This is my observation, so take it with a grain of salt, but I feel you are more likely to turn heads with symmetry rather than asymmetry in this case. But don’t worry, we can create variance with other qualities!
The Color
It stands to reason that you’d want to match your outfits because that’s what seems most ordinary. I’d also like to add, though, feel free to use complementary colors or patterns that make your primary outfit colors POP. To keep it simple you have 3 options
(1) stick a monotone barrette palette that matches your outfit (e.g., your outfit is pink and the barrettes are ALL pink)
(2) a monotone barrette palette that complements your outfit (e.g. your outfit is pink and the barrettes are green) or
(3) mix and match monotone and complementary barrettecolorse similar to your outfit. (e.g., your outfit is pink, and the barrettes are pink and green.)
Identical or Non-Identical
You can do either identically matching pins stacked or mix and match different kinds of barrettes. Both seem to be aesthetically appealing. I like to mix it up so I don’t have more than 2 in a row that are identical if I choose to use an assortment of barrettes.
The Type
This barrette hairstyle can be used from casual to fancy occassion–dress it up or down with the TYPE of barrette you choose to use. Perhaps pearls or shining beads would dress up a drab ponytail for homecoming or a night out with your significant other. If you want to be playful and flirty, let your type of barrette do the talking for you.
Summary
- Maintain the same length from barrette to barrette. Width matters less.
- Choose a monotone barrette palette or a barrette palate that complements your outfit, or mix and match similar or complementing colors.
- Use all of the same barrettes in succession or mix it up with different kinds.
- Use the type of barrette to dress up/dress down or set the tone of an outfit.
Where to buy barrettes?
Some of my favorite places to buy barrettes are Walmart, Dollar Tree, Target, Shein, Zara, H & M, Forever 21, TJMaxx, Marshalls, and Ross. The list goes on and on since it seems most fashion stores are carrying these now.
