Every Pinterest decoration search I do, returns many posts highlighting the fringe backdrop. Everywhere, in every color, and in several styles! Come to find, these fringe backdrops are pretty pricey to make with the plastic fence method. Every blog or DIY page I visited all recommended plastic fencing.
If you’re anything like me, I understand I don’t need to reuse or make a super robust backdrop. I don’t need it to last for years, so investing that much money in plastic fencing seems unnecessary. So I figured out how to do this on a BUDGET!
This blog post is about making a fringe backdrop on a budget!

Materials & Cost
- Plastic rectangular tablecloths: You can use Dollar Tree tablecloths as it does not affect the overall quality or appearance. I also recommend 3-4 colors to make your backdrop have a nice blend but with enough pop. Anything more than that all in one strand looks hectic or messy.
- I used about 2-3 tablecloths in each color to make a 6 ft high and 4-foot wide backdrop. I used 4 colors.
- Fishing wire or yarn: I recommend fishing wire over yarn.
That’s ALL you need! The DIY tablecloth backdrop will run you anywhere from $10 to 20 dollars which is depedent on where you shop and how many colors you choose to use.
Steps of making a fringe backdrop
- Cut all your tablecloths into 1.5-2 inch wide strips.
- Organize your strips by color into Ziploc bags (this will help save time later).
- Tie one end of your string to something stable.
- Decide what pattern you’d like to create with your colors. Stay consistent for each layer you make.
- Attaching the strips: Take one strip at a time and find the center of the strip.
- Create a “U” at the top of the strip at the center you just found.
- Place the “U’ under the string.
- Take the tales of the strip and pass them over the string and through the opening of the “U.”
- Pull tight until you have a tight fit onto the string.
- Continue this process for each color. I do about 8-10 strips per color and then switch colors. Repeat.
- Continue until you have your desired length.
- Use a backdrop stand or command hooks to secure each garland strand.
