As the colder months approach, it becomes an absolute MUST to dress warmly and comfortably but STYLISHISHLY. However, finding that perfect medium between the two is a challenge I’m sure we’ve all faced. But, with the persisting trend of casual high-end streetwear, we [fashionistas] can now rock comfort and STYLE. So, how to style sweatpants is a wardrobe skill we all need.
For myself, I struggled in the past to find a way not to look downright frumpy or like I was climbing into bed when I first put on sweats. After missing this trend last fall and winter, I thought we were past this look. But, OH, I was so wrong. The chic sweatpants outfit and how-to-wear sweatpants fashionably here for another fall and winter season.
This post will break down my strategy on how to style sweatpants effortlessly.

Step 1: Choose your sweatpant colors
Before deciding anything else, you must decide what color of sweatpants you want to style.
Ask yourself: Are you trying to attain a neutral or a bold look?
Neutral looks all center around a single color pallet that does not have a lot of contrast between the pieces. In contrast, a bold look will have a pronounced difference between the styled items.
I opted for a highly contrasting look with black and bright jeweled green.
Step 2: Choose accent items
The most significant trend is to style your sweatpants outfit with an overcoat or vest. Now, THIS IS KEY; your vest or coat must hang below the sweatpants’ waistline. This is the most flattering silhouette on just about everyone. Furthermore, the trend these days is a quilted or puffed item. You’ll see this is very “IN.”
The alternative is to pair your sweatpants outfit with a long and tailored wool pea coat.
For shoes, you need something that somewhat obscures the ankles, whether a high-top sneaker or a boot.
Step 3: Accessorize the fit
Now, hear me out; as important as the previous steps are, accessorizing is the step that ties the whole outfit together. Why, you may ask? Considering this opinion, I purchased this pictured set for under $25. Yup, I went to Walmart. These are men’s sweats. That being said, the remaining look is all in the other items.
In my opinion, without this step, the outfit looks unfinished. I recommend a hat, wrist jewelry to add feminity, and a bag/backpack. In my personal sweatpants outfit, I chose a matching ribbed beanie, my iWatch and charm bracelet, and a quilted crossbody bag. I added sunglasses, gold hoops, and a necklace for that little EXTRA.
Well, my fellow fashionista, I can only hope this short but effective method on how to style sweatpants helps on your next fall or winter outing.
