Metallics–are they chic or tacky? Luckily, we are in the holiday season, and metallics pants outfits are chic! Well. . . when done right.
Once upon a time, metallics seemed dated and costume-esque. However, in this new fashion era, the runway is bringing high-end fashion metallics back into everyone’s closets. I’m honestly pleased about this because I’m all in for turning what was once tacky into a chic statement.
If you’re interested in learning how to style your metallic pants outfit or the metallic fashion trend in general, keep reading!
Tips to follow when styling a metallic pants outfit:
1. Quality Counts
I’ll say this when it comes to metallic clothing, the quality counts. When you start getting into the latex, cheaply made styles and pieces, you’ll be toeing the line of tacky. You may have seen these sorts of leggings or tops around Halloween or even for EDM music concerts and festivals–it’s completely acceptable here! Otherwise, search for a higher-end opportunity. Luckily, because this trend is so popular for the holidays, many affordable options are out there!
2. Balance
Your metallic pants will likely pull attention as they should! That’s the point. That being said, using matte neutrals for your top or blouse will allow your pants to steal the show. You may be tempted to pair a bold top with our equally bold pants–however, this is risky and could look tacky. Depending on your occasion, the top can genuinely set the tone for your outfit. Do you have an in-office holiday party? Pair your metallic pants with a form-fitting collared shirt–this will look polished yet playful! For a night out on the town, consider a V neck with an embellished sleeve or shoulder. You can reference the photo below, where I paired these seriously gold pants with a muted V neck with a puffed shoulder.
3. Color
When choosing your top, you must consider the color of your metallic pants. Monochromatic looks (like I decided to do) look put-together and sophisticated. Therefore, opt for colors in the same palette as your pants choosing from either various tints (lighter than your pants) or shades (darker than your pants). Be sure to minimize the amount of contrast between your top and your pants if you’d prefer a monochromatic look. You can also choose for brightly colored tops IF and ONLY IF your metallic pants are more matte and muted. For example, dusky blue metallic pants would pair well with a bright orange sweater or a muted silver with hot pink.
Summary
In summary:
- Shop quality materials
- Let your pants steal the show. Don’t opt for tops or accessories that will compete with your pants.
- Your top color is largely dictated by the type of metallic pants–more bright and shiny pants call for muted/neutral tops or monochromatic looks, where muted metallics allow for bright, boldly colored tops.
I hope these quick tips help your metallic fashion choices and guide your CHIC, not tacky metallic pants outfit!
